Solid beginning but the end dragged out and lost me 🥲 disappointing without much conclusion

Slow as fuck.

oh my GOD it took me forever to get into this book and when when I “got into it” it was a DRAG and i listened to the audiobook!! the main character is so insufferable and just straight up MEAN the whole book to his perfect sweet angel partner cassie and i could NOT get behind that. i truly only finished this because i wanted to see the mystery solved but girl…..
the name of the book is in the woods and GUESS WHAT. the mystery that this whole book revolves around from the MC’s childhood is never even solved.
this PMO so bad i can’t even explain, i should’ve just put it down and been at peace

This book was well written but had zero resolution and I felt no connections to either of the main characters. Lack of resolution and not finding out who the murderer was wasted a lot of my carefully carved out reading time. I will not be reading another book by French.

The men in this book are so dim

Enjoyed the first two thirds; the relationship with Cassie, the mystery of the past and present mixing, the build of the story. Honestly, I had difficulty with Rob’s character—I think I’m just much less inclined towards male protagonists like this. And I did not love the ending at all. It wasn’t an issue that I had somewhat guessed what the outcome would be, but Rob’s character just completely fell off for me. And I really did not enjoy how the mystery from the past wasn’t moved forward at all! I understand that this was an intentional choice, but it just left me frustrated, particularly with how settled the present case was.

I did really love the idea of children seeing things differently, I wish it had been explored a bit more. The way that theme built alongside the plot was great, and I enjoyed how it got intertwined with archaeology and mythology and such. Still, I feel like the present case could have leaned a bit more into the supernatural stuff, like with the past one. Or left more unsaid, even.
