My first Tana French mystery - I found it refreshing to see the detective depicted in a harsh light instead of as just a perfect hero. Don't expect all lose ends to be tied up nearly with a bow at the end of this book!

A really good, atmospheric thriller, with a good sense of place and well-drawn, non-stereotypical characters, who are flawed but not in the usual ways fictional detectives are flawed.
It's the first part of a series, which is quite intriguing since, by the end, it doesn't seem like the lead characters have a long future of continuing partnership ahead of them. I had a quick look at a summary of book two to see how she makes it work, and frankly it seems like the most far-fetched thing imaginable, but who needs realism in thrillers?

This book is really well-written. It switches from detective procedural to hanging with friends to trippy flashbacks seamlessly. The only thing I didn’t like was I felt like it was obvious who the killer was. I started this in May and almost DNF’d when I saw someone classify this book as having an “unreliable narrator,” but I don’t feel like that’s an accurate description. The reader is finding things out alongside the narrator.
