This book was such a miss for me! There was practically nothing that I actually liked about it. I guess the premise is mildly interesting, but it was so poorly and boringly implemented that it destroyed any potential I thought it had. I guess I also liked the cover design.
But yeah this book spends entirely too much time building up 2 mysteries and then somehow gives them both the most boring outcomes/solutions possible. Like so much build up for what? It didn’t even feel like a satisfying or even interesting resolution.
I also disliked practically every single character. They were all annoying, boring or both. They also all mainly kept to very basic character archetypes, which came across as boring and lazy. Done well, that can come off as timeless and classic, but not in this case.
I also did not like the cop character, like we just do not need to be glorifying cop characters right now, even if you give them a girl power sub plot.
I also think the plot bounced around way too much. I do not mind it when books have multiple timelines, because it can add a lot of depth, but in this case it felt messy and confusing. Overall I just think this book was so poorly done on so many levels.

It was slow first half but it had me intrigued enough to keep going. Really liked the mix of characters however the multiple perspectives with a mixture of time jumps was a bit of a challenge for me to get used too. I did really like all the relationships between the characters and finding out how they all connected. I also feel like the mystery was a marketed a little differently than it should have been, not to say that it wasn’t good it just had me a little confused on where to put my focus. I enjoyed the ending but I’m not sure it was totally worth it in the end. I’m pretty excited to talk about it in my upcoming book club meeting!

This might also be a hot take but I could totally see this being a pretty good movie with the way to the story was formatted.

The characters in the book are wonderfully written. Told from multiple points of view and different timelines, initially confusing at first and it took me a while to work out that both the name if the character and the time in the story is given as chapter headers. once I had figured this out, the story was engaging and fast-moving . There were some simply horrid unlikeable characters, but there were enough likeable ones to counter this. My favourite characters were Louise and Judy. The themes of the book are secrets, lies, class, privilege, grief, nature, and power.  There were a few loose ends towards the end of the book that had no bearing on the story (Delphine), but other than that, it's an enjoyable mystery with good suspense, a great plot and very accessible writing style.
