The book kept me engaged although I didn’t love the ending. The different timelines and perspectives were good but at times too many if you are taking long breaks between reads.

Fantastic read! Beautifully explores dynamics of classism, sexism, prioritizing familial abuse and reputation over, no matter the victims. I see myself coming back to “The God of the Woods” again.

“It would be better, she thought, not to see anything too clearly this summer.”

This was a well-constructed mystery that was never overly predictable nor overly opaque. This made it a compelling and engaging story across both chapters and timelines. I was particularly touched by the ways in which the coming of age storylines of average (and very truthfully portrayed) teenage heartbreak and identity exploration were allowed to live fully within the grander multigenerational mystery. I am unsure how I feel about the inclusion of Carl and Jacob as minor narrators with their own POVs; in some ways I feel that they made other aspects of the story feel less like a sudden magic show reveal, but in other ways I almost enjoyed experiencing the story through the four primary female narrators and wonder whether we as readers could have experienced the same information alongside them rather than through the brief inclusion of the other two.

I listened to this on audiobook; I personally felt that the narrator has a very distinctive “character” voice, which contributed to some early difficulty keeping the multiple narrators straight and differentiated. But I am biased towards greatly enjoying audiobook narration with different voice actors for each POV, or even full cast audio productions.

Was it “good”? Yes. Did it feel like forever to get through? Also yes. Well written, but slow. I was prepared for multiple POVs and timeline jumps, but phew! While at times it felt like a chore to get through, I’m glad I did because the ending wrapped everything in a neat little bow and felt rewarding.
