This story definitely falls under the category of "good for her" I absolutely enjoyed every single second of this book with only one exception (animal death). Other than that it was twisted and gruesome and lovely!

This book was not what I expected, but I had a fun time so ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.  The 1600's protagonist read like a modern woman, and the pacing was a bit odd. It is horror, so there is gore and explicit torture/violence. I was really excited for the last 20% of the book and it delivered. Beyond that, the discussions on ecocide and spirituality/religion really hit, as well as the rumination on the nature of evil. I loved the intermingling of Native American folklore, fairy tales, and Christianity.

Consider checking the cws/tws. The art in the book is super spooky and cool. I think it added a lot to the experience!

Dark, moody and atmospheric. This was a slow build into a violent crescendo. The unhurried pace really helped cement the menacing dread that was growing and the steady undoing of the character's mental state. My anxiety was manifesting physically and I was too aware of my heart beating and muscles tensing. The pacing alone might not be for everyone but I really appreciated it.
I'd also love to mention the character art in the book! Stunning and creepy. Love, love, love it.
I'm gonna need more books to provide their own art.

File under: "Good for her (them)" + "I support women's rights AND women's wrongs".

Imagine a mix of Robert Egger's The Witch and a less sapphic Fear Street 1666.
Moral of the story; the Puritans were really fucking scary and nothing is more haunting than the rightousness of a group of people who envoke God to deliver punishment.

This was written for the preteen girls who obsessed over the Salem witch trials and never really grew out of it. Abitha and Samson are in love though, right? We all gathered that?

This book was a great and BEAUTIFUL example of a revenge story. I love it the whole anger but satisfaction at the end. chief's kiss!

This is a 'cosy' historical horror that follows a widowed woman during the times were women do not have voices and she makes her way to give those who wronged her bloody hell.

I listened to the audiobook voiced by Barrie Kreinik, she did a great job at voicing the characters. She did an amazing job on varying her voice with different characters so it was easy to follow. I will buy the physical copy because it has beautiful illustrations by the author himself.

what I like:
  • the writing beautifully described the the world, the characters and the creatures beautifully.
  • the satisfaction at the end of the were those horrid people got what they want...beautiful. I love the violent descriptions.
  • the trials, the history of 1666 and the fear of everyone, including women, was greatly written and provided a good understanding into thar time era, including me being more and more curious of that time era and witches.

what I dislike:
  • the beginning was a bit slow for me, though it is understandable as it gives you context to everything in the town, the people and the forest folk.

"If it is a witch they want, then a witch they shall have."

This is a book that will stick with me for a long time. It had a bit of a slower start, but I ended up reading the entire last half in one sitting; putting it down proved difficult.

The atmosphere was just impeccable- dark, moody, mysterious. And the writing was just so beautiful and rich. I empathized with both Abitha and Samson, and the conversations between them were delightful and enlightening to read (especially Samson asking
why Christ God can't save a girl from a debilitating case of measles- "they need a better god."
). There IS strong character development from both, but if you're looking for good-natured character development (i.e. "they decided to stop being violent after realizing killing is wrong and won't make them feel better"), you won't get it here. This is a story of righteous anger and vengeance that I absolutely ate up.

If you're looking for a book that will make you sob and laugh and clap your hands under witnessing the power of violent, primal feminine rage- this is it. There are many dark, horrible moments that lead up to it, but the payback is indeed, a witch.

Honestly? Good for her.
