I was surprised by how many of these stories I had already read. Many appeared in two previous anthologies. Even the majority of those which hadn't previously been anthologized originally ran in magazines. Only the last story had not previously appeared in print.

The quality of the stories in The Collected Stories of Frank Herbert is very uneven. Some of the best short sci-fi stories I've ever read - such as "Seed Stock," "Passage for Piano" and "Try to Remember" - along some less-than-stellar examples of the genre. I enjoyed the stories about Orne - I don't think I'd read those before - and the new story, "The Daddy Box, was a winner.

If you are expecting to be wowed, you might be underwhelmed. However, if you are willing to sort through a slew of stories in order to find the gems, you'll enjoy this book.
