This made me root for a serial killer — make of that what you will.

I received "The One" years ago as a birthday present and picked it up again on a whim. At first I was a bit hesitant. There are five stories, that interact very very little until the end.

But after a few 100 pages or so, I'd really gotten invested in 4/5 stories and wanted to see them continue. There were really surprising twists, that I didn't anticipate at all and towards the end, all the already short chapters (my fav) ended cliffhanger-ish and I couldn't put the book down anymore. Definitely one of my new favourite thrillers!

What a spectacular, brilliantly creative piece of writing. I couldn’t put it down and fell asleep reading it after keeping myself up way too late on a work night, that good. There are a multitude of storylines for varying characters and relationships, all centering around the universal “truth” that, in this world, there is one perfect match for everyone on earth and it’s genetically determined. Just send in a DNA sample and await your results. Simple, right? Far, far from it. Absolutely riveting, I will be thinking about this one for a long time.

Edited to add: this is sci-fi, and the science written here is obviously not sound. If you’ll be bothered by the scientific inaccuracies of the central element here then skip this, otherwise have fun pretending it’s real :)

3.75 stars for me. This was an interesting and fast-paced read, and I enjoyed multiple story lines (some quite a bit more than others). I almost wish that, rather than focusing on so many couples, the author had stuck with just two or three of them. It was hard to get attached to any of the characters, although I know this was obviously a plot-driven book. It felt very much like a long Black Mirror episode, and I'll definitely be interested to watch the Netflix show.

Loved this quick read! Once you catch onto the five different plot lines that don’t really intersect and keep them straight in your head - it took me 1/3 the way through to get a good rhythm - it’s an exciting page-turner until the end.

This book took me in directions that I was never expecting. It was dark, it was twisted, and it was just so darn good. I loved that there were so many perspectives being followed to show the real impact of the Match Your DNA test, and the way that everyone was so different gave it dimension. At first, I really hated that we got such short chapters for everyone and that the chapter would end right as something was happening, but towards the middle and end of the book I started to appreciate the anticipation that the shorter chapters were able to create, so the next time we met that particular character there was a bigger impact from whatever was happening.
