This book lacks the wisdom that Hesse clearly found in his later life.

It is a laborious read.

There are paragraphs of jaw dropping beauty, especially at the climax of the book.

And goodness me is it depressing.

Seit 1996 habe ich Unterm Rad wieder und wieder gelesen, in der Hoffnung, Hoffnung zu finden.

Statt dessen werde ich wütend, möchte die Figuren, natürlich nicht Flaig, anschreien. Und fürchte mich davor, die gleichen Fehler zu machen. In sofern ein waschechter Roman der Romantik.
