Non-spoiler: Overall, I liked it. It's not Tolkien, but it definitely was thought-provoking at times. The protagonist definitely isn't perfect, nor is she immature. Definitely a book worth reading. A bit generic, yes, but still good.

Spoiler: Theo was a fine character, but Artemisia was so awful to try and read anything relating to her. The love subplot is very minor (thank goodness!), and Søren is actually a nice guy, without distractingly awful character flaws (Looking at you, Tamlin. Go back to ACOTAR, and stay there). This is an epic fantasy first, courtly fantasy second, and romance (maybe) third.

There's very little actual gore here. Violence yes, but no lengthy descriptions of Ampelio being killed, or civilians being slaughtered. Her Shadows besides Artemisia were fine. Cress' surviving of the poison was again, a bit forced, but it came together well.

Verdict:
Should you read it? Yes. Don't expect a new modern classic, but it's definitely worth the what, week?, to read.

I really did go into this wanting to like it. Because I have been liking the low fantasy romances, I thought this would be up my alley.

Instead, it ended up reminding me of one of the most mediocre book series I've ever read, The Winner's Trilogy by Marie Rutkoski. I was also feeling anxious and not in the mood for anything I might end up rating below a 4/5, so I decided to cut my losses and DNF this one about 25% of the way in.

I guess if it gets better after that point, you can let me know, but for now, I couldn't make it through this one.

I was going to give this book 5 stars, but since there could be a potential love triangle I rather stay safe and give it 4 stars. Not a big fan of love triangles.

It was a slow start, but I think at around page 75+ it picked up and I was able to finish it in two days.

Glad this is only a trilogy. I don't think I would have kept up with it, if it was longer.
