I delighted to receive an ARC of this book and return to this fabulous world.
It wasn’t actually the story I was expecting but I absolutely devoured and loved every second, from its grim murderous beginning to the pure delight it turns into, if you are expecting the same as Spellsinger don’t , but you won’t be disappointed at all. This is a bit darker than the original books , but you should expect this as it’s covering trauma and abuse. But it it’s still full of warmth, wit and familiarity. Definitely read the spellsinger series first before you read this

Way of the Argosi is the first in a prequel duology about Ferius Parfax who was a very prominent character in the original series. I was really excited to hear about this series knowing how much I love Ferius as a character, but I should have known that the Ferius I love would not yet be present as this is a prequel. That is where my enjoyment kind of dwindled. I will say that is on me and not on the book because I didn't go in with the right mindset.

This book however did take a little while for me to fully get settled in. The beginning was a tad on the slow side. There were no real characters to root for other then Ferius if I am being completely honest. Durral Brown was alright but quite bland and the rest of the characters were pretty much forgettable. Bummer I know. Now the story was interesting and is what really kept me interested. Definitely went in a direction I didn't expect, so plus there. It was also just good to be back in this world and get to know about the Argosi who are such Wild Cards.

That is probably all I will go into for this review. Since this is a prequel I have already gone over at length the world and the magic system. Nothing really new to add here. So if you would like to know what I think about those particular aspects I will point you towards my reviews of the other six books in this series. So for right now, I did like this installment but it did not wow me by any means. I am still looking forward to seeing how this series wraps up because I do really like Ferius Parfax.

Sebastien de Castell is pretty much at the top of the list of my favourite authors, so for me to give a barely achieved 2-star rating to one of his novels is unprecedented and a little worrying.

Unfortunately for me, I found it almost impossible to relate to the events in this story. Perhaps it was the stretchy credibility of Ferius being able to learn sign language almost instantly, or the detailed explanations of the various artas at the beginning of each chapter. I found myself not caring over much what happened to Ferius or any other character and I skipped large parts just to get to the end as I really, really did not want to DNF this book.

Strange, as I really enjoyed The Way of the Argosi!

I surprised how much I enjoyed. The paced of plot was decent and the writing was fine. Both the cover of book and artwork was stunning. I like the charaters but they needed to flashed out more and the world building was great.
