2.5 stars. Although this had similarly enjoyable creepy elements as LAMENT, the pacing is totally off. And, while I appreciate the idea of having the sequel narrated by a different character, I really just want to know about Deirdre and Luke, and was disappointed.

I think I actually loved this book more than Lament. I love James and Nuala's relationship. Its not the lovey-dovey crap. They actually have problems and issues they have to deal with. I loved Sullivan too, and thought it was interesting what happens to him. Hopefully they'll be another book in this series!

I loved this sequel to Lament but it drove me NUTS not to know what was really going on with Dee. I understand it was focusing on James but I was dying to hear from her. The texts were a great way to convey Dee's feelings without having her talk to James. I understand also that it was probably to show the distance that has grown between Dee and James but it was killing me :) I think there might be a third one based on the way it ends but I haven't heard anything so far.

Just not good. I didn't mean to read this since I didn't like the first in the series, but I grabbed it by mistake and had nothing else to read. The instant love thing is just bad. I love Maggie Stiefvater, but this is far from what I expect from her.

So Ballad is definitely better than Lament, but we still run into some of the same problems from Lament that really diminished the reading experience. Namely, the rampant misogyny. This book had less of it compared to Lament I think only because it focused on James, so whenever James interacted with other women characters there wasn't that specific brand of internalized misogyny, it was more casual misogyny targeted towards characters that were antagonists. But, we still get that good ol' internalized misogyny through Nuala's POV, especially when it comes to how Nuala and Dee interact because of course Maggie Stiefvater writes them to be jealous and weirdly competitive. Speaking of Dee, she's the worst. I thought she was silly in Lament, but she takes the cake in Ballad. We don't see much of her in this book which I'm honestly grateful for because if we did it would just be a pity party the whole time. I get that she lost her love interest in book 1, but she saved James and completely withdrew from him after and wouldn't send any of those texts. I know she's depressed but I think it doesn't hit home for me because her relationship to Luke was so rushed/underdeveloped in Lament.
Okay, on the topic of relationships, I thought the pacing and depth of James and Nuala's relationship worked a lot better in this book which was really great considering the ending of the book.
Another random detail that seemed underdeveloped though was the inclusion of Delia in this book. I think we should have gotten more details about her earlier on because it felt like she just sort of appeared out of nowhere at the end of Ballad.
Overall, Ballad is better than Lament, but this duology just isn't Maggie Stiefvater's best work.

A rather big disappointment after the first book. I wanted to know what happened to the people in the first book, but I was left with very little. I am excited though...because after three years of wondering if there will be a third book...there is! FINALLY. Maybe I'll get the answers I was wondering about in the first.
