I did sincerely enjoy the book, but felt like it was trying to cram many different aspects of trans issues in a limited amount of time. It definitely brights the reality in fiction in regards of the realities of trans people, but certain aspects were confusing as to whether which version of the story the narrator tells is the right one. It was probably the author's intention to have the narrator be unreliable in certain regards and have readers try and interpret the book, but I felt more confused rather than intrigued.

this book was so friggin FUN. the magical realism aspect was one of my fav things--how it was naturally woven into the setting and story--and it was a joy to keep reading simply bc i wanted to see what weird, interesting, simultaneous-knitted-brows-and-smile-inducing things were gonna pop up on the page.

and it was so refreshing to see a trans author write a trans story that defied any external expectations, instead steamrolling into an adventurous, exciting romp full of diverse and multidimensional trans women doing fun and badass things, yet upholding and supporting one another in their community-minded found family, while also tackling serious topics like self-love, self-discovery, identity, and clashing ideals. the various forms of verse, prose, and even play made the story more effective and interesting as well.

this was unlike anything ive ever read and im excited to read more works by kai cheng thom.

Fierce Femmes and Notorious Liars is a trans memoir with a unique and engaging format. It has a fantastical nature that really adds to the overall feel of the book. Sometimes it was a little hard to follow as an audiobook but it has a good flow generally. Overall, I enjoyed getting to hear this story! It did remind me that I’m still not huge on memoirs except celebrity ones, but I’m glad I expanded my horizons and am not disappointed I chose this to pick up.
