The Eidolon wasn't what I expected going into it. I thought it would be a quick YA-ish action spinoff featuring the younger characters from The Tarot Sequence. Instead, it was a companion book to The Hourglass Throne; it would be a disaster as a standalone book. The major conflict is entirely unresolved within the book (as it's resolved in The Hourglass Throne) and there's very little that would make sense without context. There was the opportunity for this book to have a good villain who the kids could vanquish on their own, but that's not how things played out.

What this book does do is a fantastic job exploring the characters of Max, Quinn, and Anna. All three had major character developments, but like with the main series, biggest focus fell on Quinn. There are also interesting hints of future books throughout that I look forward to resurfacing in the years to come.

Edwards's work improves as he writes, in my opinion, and the only reason I only give this book four stars is because it doesn't stand on its own. I expect the next book like this one will be fantastic.
