All I can say is that this book wasn’t in kid-friendly language.

I absolutely love this project that Acho has embarked on, and I love that he is presenting these conversations in so many modalities (YouTube videos, podcasts, books for adults and children). His videos and books have started conversations for me with coworkers and friends on many of the subjects he presents. Acho has really made me evaluate the ways in which I am standing up as an ally, and how I can continue to improve. This particular book is geared towards middle grade readers, and I think that at times the text may be a bit complex for the intended age group. However, I would still highly recommend this one (knowing that kids may need a bit of support at times both with the content and with the complexity of text). Acho supplies a great list of resources (books, movies, videos, etc.) that kids can turn to if they want to expand their knowledge on racism and allyship. One of the other huge strengths of the book is that Acho provides kids with immediate actions they can take to be an ally.

So much to think on. I'm so grateful that we used this for a year-long book study with colleagues. There is a lot to unpack and I couldn't have felt more supported in my learning.

Grades 7 and up.

Emmanuel Acho is known for his YouTube series Uncomfortable conversations with a Black Man. Bringing this same vibe to a middle school book can be difficult but he does it with ease. The chapters are divided into clean and easy to distinguish sections. In each chapter the topic is broken down into smaller palatable sections that signal to the young reader what will be discussed and in what framework. I loved the easy-to-read and information-filled chapters. In presenting heavily weighted and emotion-filled topics to middle school readers it can be very difficult to not talk down to them. But Acho does a great job of giving them historical information as well as present-day actions and situations. This will be a stepping stone to reading more advanced books and spark an interest in pre-teen readers, nudging them to pay attention to what is happening in their world.

Excellent read in based in fact and written in terms easy for students to grasp. Unfortunately, I fear it won't reach the ears that would benefit from the most because it will likely be considered "woke." I will read the adult text of this book, as well as "Uncomfortable Conversations with a Jew" by the same author.

Emmanuel Acho takes on some big questions about race and racism and frames the answers in a way that will make sense to young readers. What started as one video addressing questions Acho felt needed answers has grown into two books and hopefully a movement by readers to make change in the world.

As a reader, I appreciated Acho's take on these questions. There were times I wished for clarification but also wondered if the adult version of this book would clear up my questions. I think this book belongs in school libraries and will be adding it to mine.

This book was indeed uncomfortable. But it was also smart, eye opening, educational, and OH SO VERY IMPORTANT READ! I think this book tackled a very touchy subject with heart and strength. Every white human should read this especially in understanding "well what does that mean to me?"
Would give to anyone and suggest for everyone!
