I think I have this figured out. The problem I have with these books is that they don't have a contained story arch. Once you get into the series, there isn't a big climactic moment at the end of each books, there aren't beginnings either. It feels like there isn't a new objective within the larger story of the series, sure we make progress in the narrative, but it isn't satisfying. Book 3 just stops and book 4 picks up where it left off with very little preamble. Like, this is a story that I won't fully appreciate until I get to the end of the series. In fact, I'm not sure if I will appreciate it then. I think I would have to re-read the series, knowing the end, to appreciate the details of how we get there. I'm really hoping that the last book in the series will wrap things up with a bang because I REALLY want to love these books more than I do.

Idk what crack I smoked in 2016 thinking this was a disappointment. Geralt passes Ciri the torch, and it's all the better for it. With her dark deeds yielding dark delights as she must reconcile what she's done and what she needs to do; grappling with internal and external conflict greater than Geralt has had to so far. But Sapkowski manages to weave threads of hope that don't undermine what is a harrowing tale

EDIT: I will caveat that this feels like the weakest translation of the bunch, with clumsy sentences and entire recurring characters not getting description. If you can push through that, you get one of the best Witcher books of the bunch
