Might be one of those horror stories that is scarier for women than it is for men. I FELT this fear. The writing is good, and Arnold Friend might be one of the most evil villains I've read. This was never required reading for me, so reading it "for fun" made it more enjoyable. BUT I think I would have liked discussing this story in an academic environment as well.
Left me feeling uneasy. I didn't love the story, and was fairly confused at times. Interesting, but most likely won't read again.
I didn't love all of the stories in this collection, but the ones that I *did* love were incredible. I don't always know what to think about Oates, but the woman can tell a hell of a story.

Joyce Carol Oates scared me with 20 pages. Damn that was good writing.
If you can't read long books, read short stories such as these. Oates is a great writer.
