I don't think this story was meant for me. That being said it was still a lot of nothing until the end, when clearly *something* happens, but I don't know what the point of it was or what it meant.

Simple language conveying a complex issue. It mirrors exactly what is wrong with today's sickening "love" culture: temporal and inauthentic. Oates is simply wonderful.
This book is haunting. I've never been so creeped out about a character before. It's been awhile, but man was this a great read. A girl who wished nothing more to escape her life finally gets that wish. However, just not in the way she suspected it.

My rating is for the short story (which can be found, for free, here) and not the whole of this book, with the essays and the bio etc. Anyhow, an unsettling story that resists interpretation, I'm not surprised it's one of the most famous horror stories of all times.
