After seeing the immensely well done and fascinating Runaways movie (based on this book) with Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning I wanted to know more. I have always been a sucker for rock memoirs and anything taking place in the drug fueled haze of LA. I paired this book with the documentary "Mayor of the Sunset Strip" about Rodney Bingenheimer - and ample scenes with Kim Fowley - manager of The Runaways. While bubblegum I still found this memoir to be highly readable and Cherie to be very likable despite her problems. I have been a fan of the circa 1980 teen flick FOXES which feature Cherie Currie so it was nice to finally get more background on the band.
Totally voyeuristic of me, of course. Liked the book well enough. I've seen the movie based upon this memoir, too. (That's what brought me here.) Only one side of the story, though. It would be nice to hear what the others felt/witnessed during this time period.
Enjoyed this more than I thought I would. The runaways were a little older than me and I didn’t really follow them. I always thought Cherie and Joan in particular were so tough and not intimidated. So one of the surprises I came away from the book was how vulnerable they actually were. Interesting and sad to read as an adult how they were taken advantage of when they were just these young girls.
I have had no desire to ever see a movie with Dead Eyes in it, but after reading this, I really want to see Runaways.
Great if you're into shameless name-dropping and rock 'n roll history; bad if you're looking for a literary memoir.

I absolutely love the runaways and have always been enamoured by the tough beauty of Cherie. This look into her life was relatable and very easy to read
FANTASTIC. cherie feels like a friend - she's so earnest about her struggles and her own pitfalls, you dont feel like youre reading about a glamorous rockstar, but a normal person like anyone else who happened to live a crazy life.

Very fascinating look into The Runaways and life in Los Angeles in the 70s and 80s. Spoiler alert- Cherie Curry married and has a son with Robert Hays. Yes. That guy from Airplane! Gave it four stars because it was a bit long.
