WOW WOW WOW
I CANNOT EXPRESS HOW MUCH I LOVED THIS BOOK
EVERYONE NEEDS TO READ THIS

The love drama to me was a little bit excessive. It made Ryiah dumb, there I said it!

4.5 stars

I adore this series. The only downside for me is that the first book was spent covering Ryiah's entire first year at the magic school and this second book shoved all the rest of her schooling (4 years) into one book. I would have loved to spend more time with Ryiah and her training, her school friends, etc. But I am eager to see where life takes her now and can't wait to move on to book 3.

I received this book through Rachel E. Carter. I got it in exchange for an honest review. I’m thanking Rachel E. Carter for providing me with the copy of this book.

“I don’t need another ‘adversity builds character’ speech, Darren. That man is a chauvinistic pig. Where’s your adversity?”
Darren raised a brow. “I’m looking at it.”

This was a really good book. Even better than First Year, and that's rare. Because most sequels don't outshine the first book in a series. But Apprentice outshone First Year big time!! This series is becoming better and better, I LOVE IT =]

I had to get used to the fast foward timing in this story. As this book is about the years after the First Year at the Mages School. The story follows Ryiah's journey into becoming a Combat Mage. If you thought First Year was hard on Ryiah, please read on in this series. She keeps growing and keeps fighting her battles, physically and mentally. We see the low-born girl evolving into a strong, physically and mentally, woman. But there's one battle she can't seem to win or lose. The battle isn't over just yet. The battle I'm talking about is a certain non-heir... Let's call him Darren for now ;]

That battle was just an emotional roller-coaster, and not just for Ryiah... I felt her emotions, her happiness, her sorrow, her pain from betrayal and her butterflies.. Rachel wrote a really good romance in this series. But she didn't keep it with Ryiah and Darren. Introducing --> Ian.. The sweet boy who was easy on the eyes as well... But that's when the battle gets more serious and difficult to handle for Ryiah. The boy who is good for her, but she doesn't feel the fire with, or the boy who betrays her, kisses her and then pushes her away and bullies her, but sets her body, mind and soul on fire??? I get her struggle. Wanting the unreachable and not feeling the fire with the second choice.... Ryiah is so strong, her heart keeps getting shattered and put back together, over and over again... Respect for her!!

I'm also amazed in how Rachel introduced us to Jerar in this book. We've gotten a tiny glimpse in First Year, but Apprentice was like WELCOME TO JERAR. We've got to see the nature, the cities, the people, the royals and the politics. The beautiful and the ugly parts of it. It's written so realistically, it's amazing!! She can write so detailed and vividly, you are there..

I can only finish with I LOVE IT AND IF YOU LIKE FANTASY WITH ROMANCE GO READ THIS SERIES!!!!!!

XoXo Felicia.

I think I like this book more than the first one, but again some aspects were brushed off, what about Lynn??? There were other things that I wasn't a fan of, but I really enjoyed the book. This series is addictive!

Original and full review over on Beyond the Book Reviews

I am just going to start off this review by saying YES, there is a love triangle. For those who hate them and could never fathom reading another book with a triangle, fear not, for Apprentice's triangle actually gets revolved within this book. I was really worried when it was introduced. I hate falling in love with two of the characters and not wanting the character to pick either due to the fact that I want them all to myself. This did happen, because let's face it, Carter created two devilishly handsome young men. Both were cunning in there own ways. I do think though that this triangle gave us as readers an insight on a thing or two. The first would be witnessing that the main character Ryiah, could either have the easier path with the well rounded boy, or choose the difficult path with the egoistic boy. I won't reveal which boy she does choose, but I really did enjoy reading about both opportunities that were being presented.

As I mentioned in my review for First Year, Rachel knows how to execute the story and the world's true potential. We were taken to many different settings in this book; due to the constant training and field work required. Each one was described and portrayed in the most brilliant way possible.I loved getting the chance to see more unique settings. I also liked seeing the people in each area as well. I think one of my favourite settings would have to have been when Ry was on the ship. It was super interesting to read about.

This book in the series should also be titled as "Emotional Rollar-coaster Ft. Darren". We, as readers are subjected to the many sides of Darren throughout this book in particular. You know how there is 50 shades of grey? Well there are like 100 shades of Darren. This wasn't a bad thing most of the time, it just induced pain in my heart due to the many mood swings. I will say however that within the last few chapters all his emotional mood swings get redeemed.
