What a welcome back to the world of the Delta Heirs- I have missed these characters so much and MAN does it feel good to be back among them. Jaymin and Tate gift us with a story about Dylan- the lethal, trusted, and observant heir who charmed us all with his brooding mystery. His story delivers on all the addictive charm that this dynamic duo created in the first book of the series- the dark suspense, the sexiness, the emotional angst, and the twists and turns….and, most importantly, the dynamic characters we just can’t get enough of.

I won’t say much about the story because you want no spoilers for this wild ride, but I loved Dylan. Tate and Jaymin, you clever clever girls. Dylan somehow captures all the nostalgia and fondness I have for the first trilogy while also feeling fresh and decidedly different. The survivalist elements paired with the elitist lawlessness harkens back to the very beginnings of the Delta Heirs series and gives Dylan roots that feel fondly familiar, and Brooke’s powerlessness at the mercy of the scheming agendas speaks to the mountains the heirs have already conquered. Plus, we get some face time with all of our favorites. But Tate and Jaymin give Brooke and Dylan a story that feels new. They respect and honor the story that has already happened- the Herculean efforts of the heirs gain power over their lives and destinies- so we have a new danger, one whose scale and scope feels right for where the heirs are now. AND, the pace of this story is very different- as they smartly delay the unfurling of our main conflicts so we can really get to know Brooke. Don’t worry, we still get the gritty darkness and deliciously soap operatic danger and twists, but first we invest in Brooke. But most interesting of all is that this is a love story that picks up mid-journey- which is a really interesting choice. Of course, there are “off the page” parts of this story I’d like to have seen- but this makes a statement about what matters, establishing that the real foundation of this relationship only begins at their true meeting.

Brooke feels radically different from many of the heroines Tate and Jaymin have written- and I could not be more obsessed with her. She’s softer- there is a gentleness to her, a sweet fragility that just draws you in. Of course- she’s got a bit of sass to her (this is Tate and Jaymin, afterall)- and she’s admirably clever and resourceful. And despite all her troubles, she’s still optimistic, still bright and full of love. This is my favorite kind of heroine- a survivor absent resentment or bitterness, a heroine whose pliant softness ends up being a strength. Her life has taught her to submit, to relinquish power to protect herself- and this book is really about her rewiring that in her mind- finding her voice, reclaiming her power, finding out who she is when she doesn’t have to defer her identity to the whims of others. Her character journey is really powerful- and so beautifully constructed. A character who finds freedom comes from recognizing what is already within her.

Dylan (the man) still feels somewhat of a mystery to me. And, while I was craving to peel him back a bit more, artistically speaking that is a bold and creative choice from Jaymin and Tate. They’ve taken their title character and sidelined his perspective, kept us mostly in the dark about his inner workings, his motivations, his journey. The book is called DYLAN, but this really isn’t Dylan’s story at all. The book isn’t about him, the book is about his impact on our heroine- the catalytic spark he ignites in her life. Dylan is a turning point, not our focus- the character arc that matters is his Brooke’s. That said, of course, we still get plenty of his yumminess through her eyes-the dominant caveman alpha, his stoic savagery, his pensive sexiness, and just enough emotional transparency (especially towards the end) for us to feel somewhat connected to him. But Tate and Jaymin really let Brooke shine- hard to do when you have a character as captivating as Dylan. We were thirsty for Dylan, but Jaymin and Tate gave us his Brooke instead-and I couldn’t be happier.

Where Dylan (the book) really shines is how beautifully it conveys this series central theme- FAMILY. No matter who we are, our resources of our power, we all need one thing to humanize and center us- connection. The belonging you find with your community. What unites these motley crew of dangerously powerful but lovable is their endless and unconditional love of each other. All betrayed, abandoned, or hurt by their given families, they’ve created their own family. No matter what crazy thing comes their way, they are unstoppable- because they have each other. They aren’t alone. And a love like that sustains, it inspires, but most importantly, it heals their brokenness. There is no greater gift than the bonds of the family you choose- and in its own unique way, Dylan is a beautiful reminder of what makes THIS family so special. I’ve missed them so!

I like how messy they are. They both suck at communicating, but I still don't see how they fell in love with each other if they never talked. It does seem like they got together really fast. The ending was very convenient.

I had high expectations for this book. I loved Dylan in the original series and his character had so much depth I was really expecting a lot out of him in his own story. Unfortunately, this book didn't carry the same depth and interest in Dylan as the Broken Legacy books. I was pretty disappointed we spent half the book in a wilderness camp. That plot line just didn't hold any appeal foe me. Not with everything we know Dylan is capable of. Brooklyn was broken but strong. I didn't hate it, but I wanted so much more.

I love that Dylan got his own book because let's be honest we all wanted Dylan to get his happy ending.

Brooklyn. My heart hurt for her in so many different ways, and all of the shit that she went through was horrible. She is a fighter, strong, and oh so resilient. I admire all of that about her. I loved how she finally found her voice towards the end of the book.

Dylan. I can not get enough of him. He is everything you could want. Dylan is protective and stubborn, but when he loves he loves hard.

Their connection and the spice was deliciously good. You could tell how drawn they are to one another.

The epilogue made my heart so happy. I loved getting to see the rest of the Delta 5 live out their best lives with the ones they love.

The plot was weak and everything went too quickly, her brother, the camp, the old nice lady, the pregnancy, like please breathe a little.
I loved Dylan in the previous books but I didn't connect to his love story with Brooke. I didn't like her that much.
The mother reveal was ridiculous and NGL but both Beck and Riley were assholes when we first met them, true to character for Beck but not for Riley.

Short read, fast paced, a little spice - I really enjoyed Dark Legacy Series and this was a good spin off/continuation of the story from the point of view of a new character.
