i just dont think its good
I was going to rate this 3 stars just to fit in with everyone else but I sort of enjoyed this book more than I should've, just like how Dimmesdale enjoyed Hester when he shouldn't have I'm
This classic novel was well written even though it was a bit predictable. Some aspects were unrealistic and I could not connect with the child. I'm glad I read it.
Fav quote:
“She wanted, what some people want throughout life, a grief that should deeply touch her, and thus humanize and make her capable of sympathy.”

It's a conflicting read. I loved the philosophical commentary on social structures, misguided perceptions, and the handling of shame, particularly sexual shame, in a highly repressive society. It's humorous that Hawthorne was so critical of social injustice regarding the Puritans, while we would still consider his generation to be highly repressive. Hawthorne hits important notes, but the style of the writing is bone-gnawingly tedious. Four stars purely for the philosophical content and his expression of these concepts both in literal and figurative terms. Otherwise, it would have been a lower rating because of the drudgery and overt self-awareness of the language, especially that god-awful Custom House preamble; I was ready to throw the book across the room at multiple points while chewing through that chapter. This is coming from someone who enjoys other 19th-century classics.
