Edit 10/31/24: Okay, so I've had some time to sit with my thoughts on this book. There are definitely some aspects of it that don't hold together well as a modern reader, but considering both the time period it was written in and the fact that it was written by a male author, I'm somewhat impressed by how sympathetic Hawthorne portrays Hester Prynne and Dimmesdale's situation.

I didn't read this book in school, so I was coming into the audiobook having really only seen Easy A. I had a hard time following the story while driving. I'd like to give this book another go when I can sit down and spend time with the words. I will definitely go with print or digital; I think not being able to see the words made it a lot harder to comprehend. I am hopelessly of the 21st century.

Very good book about sin, stigma, and shame. It also explores concepts of religion, revenge, love. Worth a read.

I can see why it would’ve been a big deal at the time, and in general academically. I can’t say I found the writing very engaging, I’m not really sure if the ideas were just not that complicated or if I don’t like how Hawthorne writes.
