Que dire à part... C'était magnifique. Très dur. Mais très beau. Très bien écrit. Un joyau de poésie en prose par moment. Et aussi dure que soit l'histoire il n'y a pas de violence sexuelle au centre !!! Ce qui est vraiment très appréciable.

Initially, I had a tough time getting into the story. It’s heavy and rich, but beautifully told. Eventually, I couldn’t get enough of it.
Incredible book! It sat in my queue on libby for half a year and I forgot what it was about. Did I add it because she is a Bennington alum? Because that part really shocked me. I read this every day on my commute and it made me excited to get on the damn train!!

The writing was stunning - the audiobook was narrated by the author and was incredible. Her story is incredible- all she went through is awful, but she truly created a work of art.

This book was the most beautifully written book I’ve read in a long time. The prose and word choice left me wanting for nothing. Safiya Sinclair’s life under her father’s roof was riddled with isolation, stress, bullying, and abuse. In addition to the Rastafarian extremism imposed upon them, I also recognized threads of narcissism in her father, a mirror of my own childhood.
The author’s mother was the second main character in this story, always intervening with the father where she could, encouraging the children to express themselves, educating the children so they’d have a chance to succeed, advocating for the children. The author reminded the reader that her mother was also a product of her environment, never so apparent as during the trip to Washington D.C.
I will be thinking of this story for a long time, for the author’s struggles, for her gorgeous writing, and for her triumphs in the face of everything meant to keep her down.
