I was initially unsure about this one, but it developed really nicely. Underlying this is a shocking story which I only saw a tiny bit of it coming.

I liked the journey Caitlin went on, maturing over the course of the book and changing her outlook on things - plus I loved the connection she made with Daisy and Henna, becoming their protector. I thought Covid was a nice plot layer without being in your face. I felt the ending pulled everything together well too.

I really struggled with some of the idiotic decisions Caitlin made at the beginning and how blind she was - I was definitely not that naïve at 19! I'm also not convinced about some other choices - I feel there were a few "opportunities".

Overall, a clever psychological thriller showing how people can be manipulated.

*I received a complimentary copy of the book from RandomThingsTours and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

I may have been expecting more from this book, expecting or hoping for a 5 star thriller but while it was a good story it was not a 5 star one in my opinion. The premise of this story is a young girl who left home with a boy and two friends just before the pandemic. Things went wrong and as she was trying to get home she was picked up by a family who seemed to have things she felt her family did not. From here, things start to go horribly wrong but the story was drawn out and I think could have been several chapters shorter.

While the ending as good the drawn out chapters took away from the climax at least for me. For those that may enjoy folk songs it may be of more interest as there were folk song lyrics interspersed throughout the book. I would rate this a solid 3.25 starts.

I was riveted at first - this seemed the kind of mystery I would love and I did. I did love it, but as the book drew closer to the conclusion I began to become a bit frustrated. I also found I didn't like the main character all that much and found some of her actions and decisions very questionable. I also kept wanting to shout at her!! Overall it was enjoyable but the ending was far too neat and for Henna and Daisy I would be stunned if their journies wrapped up like that also. Didn't feel too realistic.

My Review
We are following Caitlin's as she hitchhikers on the roadside back from Italy a summer holiday turned sore picked up by a seeming lovely family she grateful until this turn into longer than a night and she seems to be stuck.

Your Welcome to STAY .

This is a slow burn book which keeps you guessing
I enjoyed how the epidemic served as a backdrop for the story because it actually happened and cannot be ignored. There is a lot of discussion about how breaching lockdown regulations prevents certain courses of action, but it has always been permissible to do so in an actual emergency.

Even if she appears to be aware of it while she is acting foolishly, Caitlin's actions are occasionally dumb, but she is still just nineteen. Regardless, I enjoyed her character and the relationship she forges with the girls.

The numerous references to hands and folk tunes, as well as the throwaway lines referencing unknown future occurrences, became rather tiresome and seriously detracted from the plot.

It was a struggle to get to the conclusion because of the plodding plot and the unlikable characters, but it was worthwhile because of the fantastic ending.

I was totally gripped by this book! The story is intense and heartbreaking. Without giving too much away, this book has consensual sex, mentions of women dying from childbirth, cruelty to children, underage rape, sex traffickers and selling babies. It is such a hard book to read but definitely worth it, in my opinion! I felt so sorry for Caitlin, Henna, Daisy, and Violeta. They all deserved so much more than what they got from Marcus and Mimi. I knew from the beginning that something was off with them 2 as they just seemed to perfect. Overall, please give this one ago, but do be careful of trigger warnings.
