Samme gode driven over femte boka i serien. Ble litt stressa underveis da jeg så at jeg hadde hoppet over bok fire ... så nå må jeg på biblioteket her i Whistler. Har de den ikke går det fort fra Vancouver å få den over. Like god service som hjemme :-)

not sure why this wins an edgar award. seems like a competent but not spectacular version of a british criminal minds. maybe it’s because i didn’t go through the whole series idk.

the two or three fake outs the author used felt out of place and i didn’t like them.

too many things are set up with almost laborious detail and then the actual action happens off to the side or from a different perspective. was often frustrating.

but in the end those are minor complaints, it’s a very competent thriller, but like i said, not sure why it wins an award.

Probably one of my favorite Jack Caffery novels so far. this book for me was one of the few that I didn't want to put down. I would have read this one cover to cover if I could have.
I can't wait to start the next one.

I feel better taking a break from the series now that this novel got everything back on track. At least mostly. Less Flea and Walking Man, more of Jack solving an icky but compelling crime (though we're still not getting as much character development with him as in the first two novels). Ending was solid as well, though I did have my suspicions about who the culprit was early on. But an interesting twist on the true motive for the crimes which surprised me, so I'll say 3.25.

Quite the book. Creepy as heck, also a tad bit disturbing. I really enjoyed Mo Hayder's writing, even if the book disturbed me to no end. There were a lot of twists and turns in this book.

I really struggled with rating to give this. But decided on 4 stars since it has stuck with me. Yes the subject matter is highly disturbing, but Mo Hayder's writing is great and her stories are unpredictable.

Mo Hayder's novels tend on the gruesome side but she is such a good writer that I can forgive her that. This is one of her best.

Another wild ride by Mo Hayder.

However once again the casual and bizarre racism peppered throughout Hayder's books is jarring. I don't understand why it is even part of the book, or what exactly she's attempting to comment on, or what point she's trying to make. In this book there's a straight-up hard-r N bomb from a character described as "truly colourblind" and basically one of the "good ones". Like...pardon me ma'am but bro just dropped a slur. And it's definitely not coming off as satire, or a commentary on the fact that people who profess their "colourblindness" are actually being low-key racist, because Hayder then goes on to say how diversity training is useless and not needed by good cops like this cop that just said the N word repeatedly for lols because he's SO not racist he can just say that shit.

If an editor was able to cut out these utterly idiotic and out of touch, ignorant asides out, the book would have been way better. Plot and pacing-wise, Hayder's got it nailed. But holy balls she's gotta lay off the super weird and uncomfortable low-key fetishization/obsession she has with Black folks in particular because what in the holy fuckin hell, dude. Chill.

Also just a note: I am not paying any money for these books because yikes. I am reading for free and not monetarily supporting this author.
