Adelaide is a school teacher. When a man who brings her books whom she has helped financially makes promises to her, she decides to see them through. She arrives in a place where he is, only to be jilted. This leads her to an opportunity to become a private tutor and governess to a young girl who does not speak. The young girl's father is a sheep farmer.

I found this book to be pretty good, but it didn't captivate me fully. I thought the characters were lovable, but sometimes I felt rushed while reading it. I thought some of the action sequences were really great though. Not a bad book! I am glad I got to read it.

My rating: 3.5 out of stars

This is my first Karen Witemeyer book. I decided to pick this one up because I was in the mood for something light and this book had so many good reviews by people I trust.
Though I didn't love it as much as I had hoped I would, I did still like it.

"Head in the Clouds," has a good cast of characters and an interesting premise.
Adelaide is a spunky and loyal person, who you can't help but love and root for. She embodies the "though she be but little she is fierce," archetype to a tee. I especially loved her scenes with her young student, Isabella.
Gideon is a charming and thoughtful character. His scenes with Adelaide, especially the one at the party, were pretty adorable.
Isabella is a fun character. She brings both levity and gravity to the story. I would love to see a book featuring her as a young adult!

The premise, while not that original, was interesting enough to keep my attention. There were a few plots twists that caught me by surprise. I think Karen Witemeyer did a good job with the pacing in the story, for the most part.
The only thing I didn't love, in regards to the pacing, was how quick the romance happened. The "love," word got thrown around a little too quickly, in my opinion. I had a feeling that this would be an instalove story, but I wasn't prepared for how quickly it would happen.

My other problem with this book was that it had a pretty graphic attempted se**al assault scene. Adelaide gets really beaten up and would have been r*ped if Gideon hadn't come to save her just in time.
I noticed several years ago that there was a trend in Christian fiction books for there to be a scene were a man forces himself on the heroine (it started around the time "Head in the Clouds was published). This is a trend I don't like. Thankfully it's one that's not been as popular in the last few years.
I really wish the author hadn't chose to put this scene in the book or had chosen to make it more brief. I think that that scene could be extremely triggering for anyone who has experienced any form of se*ual harrassment.

While I did have a couple of issues with this book, I did still have fun reading it. I think I probably will read more of Karen Witemeyer's books in the future.

Head in the Clouds by Karen Witemeyer

If you cant tell, I'm on a severe Karen Witemeyer reading binge at the moment! I love her writing style, and characters, and the setting of Texas!

This story, with Gideon and Adelaide, is by far the most intense one I've read by Karen. With a couple different gun fights, and kidnapping, and the creepy bad guy, I was on the edge of my seat the entire time! The story's theme of redemption, unconditional love, and loyalty was so good! I related so much with Addie, and her scatterbrained, imaginative ways.

Five stars from me!

I enjoyed this book more than I expected! While the first couple chapters had me rolling my eyes and other parts were a little sappy, on the whole, this book balanced the romance with the adventure quite nicely. Actually, I think I liked the adventure part (stolen inheritances, runaway heiress, poisoning, murder, and all that) better than the romance (which was still sweet, but I love a good mystery)!
As a side note, a woman is nearly raped, but the hero arrives in time to save the day. It wasn’t too detailed, but it was part of the story.

Enjoyable sweet romance with a predictable plot. I liked the first half more as it lagged when the villian showed up.

This was definitely a fast-paced novel that intrigues you, I read it in two days! I really love how the author writes descriptions, but at some points it was a little too descriptive, and the romance was a little two perfect, so for those two reasons I took away a star. But I really liked the plot, and how the main characters focused on God and talked to Him during everything. The fact that the author literally put a gallant, British gentleman in roguish cowboy boots is a little funny.

My heart is still pumping from those last few chapters!

What a great story with a lot of heart-racing, attention-grabbing, and (clean!) swoon-worthy moments!

Not as good as some of the other books I've read by this author. I just didn't care about the characters very much, the romance happened pretty quick, and it was very very preachy.

GR Rating: 2 stars - OK, eh, fine, so-so
