It was a good read but do listen to the reviews when they say the best part of the story is the last 20%. As a lot of the book is switching between the present and 3 years ago.
Pros: This book for me was really interesting as I’ve never read a book about baseball before. The story follows Zach through his journey of being a baseball player throughout the majors and how he find love along the way.
Cons: Personally this book felt long at times and rushed toward the end. I was hoping there was a bit more sweetness but that just my personal opinion ðŸ˜.
Content Warnings: This story talks about big topic such as coming out, homophobia and the general challenges of being in sports as a disabled player.
Overall this book is a 4 stars.

This book felt like it was trying too hard. The blurb makes it sound like a second chance romance, which it is (kinda), but at least 50% of the book is lengthy flashbacks to the relationship they first developed a few years before. The SCR trope was not really utilized to the best of its ability because this book is actually two different novels about the same characters pieced together to make one book, which left little room for the second try at their relationship to progress more organically and cohesively.
I would’ve preferred it to be one way or the other—either the story of their love as it first grew and developed, or the story of them trying again and actually having time to build the new relationship on the people they’d become.

i liked with how slow-moving this story was, we were entirely focused on zach and his own personal journey as a ball player who’s grappling with his sexuality. seeing the circle of characters around him who make an impact on this journey—eugenio, johnson, morgan, his mom—made for very touching moments once we hit the climax of the story, reaching towards the end.
as out of touch i am with baseball, and am incapable of recalling any info about the sport that plays a huge part in this book, i loved seeing zach stuck in the throes of the game. i liked how as slogging it can seem to outsiders (including some us non-sporty readers), on the mound, it’s step by step. seeing how this can connect to his relationship with his sexuality made every single detail (and there is a lot) very significant, and i appreciate that the author went all in in exploring that.
