One of the best plays I have read--I would love to see this performed! So much emotion and so intelligent in its deconstruction of African American identity in the United States. What happens to a dream deferred?
These characters will stick with me for awhile. Essential 20th century reading.

This play is just as good as anyone says it is, and then some. Each character is full, warm, complicated, and pushing the envelope in some way. I can't imagine how it startled audiences - especially white audiences - in the 1960s, especially considering how it continues to startle audiences today. I read this one for the first time back in school and it made an impact, but rereading it as an adult is something different. So many of the speeches hit much harder for me now. Asagai's speech on idealism vs realism and what he thinks it means to truly enact change in an oppressive world is just as electric and necessary as it was when this play first came out. Seriously, wildly good.

An absolutely wonderful read and listen, I highly enjoyed the development of plot and characters, and found myself pleasantly surprised at how much I connected to the characters in such a short period of time. Would love to see this play performed in person!
