Reread this book after several years. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND listening to the audio CD from L.A. Theatre Works.

Realistic dialogue, very smart. Out of the frying pan into the fire - these are characters to meet the world head-on.
The play A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry takes place in Chicago not too long after World War II. It is about a Black family immediately after a family member dies and they must figure out what to do with the money. One character wants to pay for education, another wants to begin a liquor store, and the last wants to buy a new house for the family. I did not really enjoy this play. It had several good messages, such as the importance of family, preventing prejudice from clouding our vision and pursuing dreams. The symbolism showed this well. However, the play was quite weak from a storytelling point of view: the plot was not extensive and somewhat predictable and it was difficult to sympathize with characters who made unintelligent decisions. This play is for people interested in the time after World War II from a Black family’s point of view.

For example, when Walter used most of the money to invest in a liquor store, he lost it because he was careless and lacked common sense.

I had to read this for school after our AP Lang test so I went into this book hating just the idea of it but it was entertaining. Some of it read like a soap opera which made it very interesting. The plot was just kinda lacking because it was really short and I feel like it didn't have like an important message like most English book have.

A classic tragedy and yet true to what goes on now. Set after WWII in a getto. How can we ask for better understanding of poverty and still keep our head in the sand.
