Lorraine Hansberry was only 29 when she wrote this play. I am always blown away by authors who are so young writing masterpieces. This play is truly a masterpiece from beginning to end. Hansberry has so many things packed in here and she does it in an entertaining way. No, its not always butterflies and flowers in our heroes' household, but there is hope at the end and that is all that matters. Definitely worth the read.

One of those classic plays I’ve heard of but never got the chance to read until now, and I’m glad I did. I thought the story was really gripping and found myself caring about all of the characters, even those I couldn’t fully sympathize with. The play hits you with an absolutely devastating ending to Act 2, only to surprise you with a hopeful turn right at the end. I can see how and why this work was so important for its time.

I love this play - I never read it, I only saw the play once (in 2014 with Denzel Washington and LaTanya Jackson) and saw the movie. I am so glad I read it.
The story of a Black family in South Side Chicago, in 1950s before the Civil Rights movement, wanting to improve their financial situation with an insurance payout from the death of the father. It highlights the struggles of racial discriminations, assimilation and racism that plagued US then and unfortunately still are present.

I listened to this on audiobook and it was fantastic. The ways this is still so relevant 66 years later adds another layer to its brilliance.

Sped through thisÑvivid dialogue and memorable characters, and a premise with as much relevance today as it did in the 1950s.
