I'm not going to be a smartass. To be honest, I had trouble memorizing the names of the mothers and their daughters. I kept on looking at the list of their names on the front page, despite the fact that I've already watched the movie twice, and I know that, this time, my attention span is not the one to blame. :))

Nevertheless, what a moving book! Another masterpiece written by Amy Tan that talks about the adversities different Chinese mothers faced and the troubles they had on raising their children who were all born instead in the Land of the Free.

The mothers had definitely suffered more and it is their job to try to help their daughters to swerve away from the dark path. It is their job to enlighten them on the truth despite their tongues alien to American and accustomed to the language to which they were born. It is their job to bring love and peace in spite of their daughters' desperate reaction to pull away.

Each mother is different in a special way but it is their love and friendship over mahjong that brought them to a closely-knitted relationship thicker than water.

Fall in love again with the culture of our fellow Chinese as they struggle and succeed over every endeavour life throws it.

I couldn't connect to any of the characters because there were too many! I wish it was focused on one or two main characters instead of 5 by the time I reached ~30% of the book. I just can't enjoy books with too many plots.

After each chapter it felt like a mini story, and slowly it combined the aspects of these intricate mother daughter relationships
