i think i was mainly drawn to this book because it was one of the novels my freshman class was set to read, yet never got to towards the end of the school year. is this book a classic? yes. can i see why it's a classic? yes. is this book also dated and leans heavily on the perspective of how white people address racial issues? yes.

while i left this book loving the finch family (atticus, jem, and scout more than alexandria), there are definitely some gripes i've got about my man, atticus. he can be so passive at times, and while i respect his respect for his children as people, he's very blasé (which is why it's hilarious to me that anyone would ever ask if he were a radical, but i digress). maybe it's just 'cause i'm in my 20s, but i believe those with a "i can't hate anyone" mindset come from a place of privilege and are a touch naive.

another reviewer had mentioned wanting to see/'hear' more from the black characters featured in this book, and i agree with that sentiment. i was far more interested and curious about the daily lives of calpurnia, tom robinson, or mr. dolphus raymond's family. granted, the main characters are interesting in their own right (specifically atticus' approach to being an attorney and the children's little adventures 'round the neighborhood), but i swear my ears bled a little every time i heard sissy spacek say the n-word, hard-r. i get why it's there, i get it, i get it, i get it. doesn't make it any less uncomfortable.

generally a great book, it's held up fairly well since 1960, BUT its nuances are lacking by today's standards (which is likely a take you'd gain after absorbing relatively any piece of media trying to inform its audience about bigotry made 60+ years ago). i'll probably end up watching the film adaptation soon.

This Book was such an amazing read and Talks about serious topics during a time period where people of color were seen as less than. This book shows the compassion and evergoing curiosity of children and how no one understands people like they do.

Lee's beautiful prose and poeticism and her lovely, lively characterization are only overshadowed by her occasionally patronizing accounts of several Black characters and glossing over of several characters' casual cruelty. Atticus Finch is the most well drawn character though he is not perfect by any means, but Lee does a good job of showing him through the POV of his 8yo daughter, who thinks he is, and then lets you judge for yourself. I listened to this on audiobook and hearing so many racial slurs over and over was deeply uncomfortable, but maybe that was the point.

I know that the setting is Alabama in the 1930’s, but the repeated use of the n-word made me uncomfortable
