No word of a lie, it’s a very long, very difficult read. However, it is very funny with lots of interesting characters and gripping moments. The length is a hurdle, I found it hard to push through it but I’m glad I did because the last few chapters are very good.

That being said I will most likely never ever read this book again because omg what an insane effort. I’d be interested in watching the Hulu show though.

One of the most influential war books I’ve read. Has one of my favourite book quotes: “When i look up, i see people cashing in. I don’t see heaven or saints or angels. I see people cashing in on every decent impulse and every human tragedy”. P. 510, Chapter 42.
The cynicism and pessimism of this book and the point it serves to make captures the pointlessness of warfare and the absurdity of war’s purpose. It’s satyrical approach towards war and corruption is eternally relevant. If I could force it to be required reading I would. I would love to read this book again and again, taking extensive notes not to mention having someone to talk to about its ideas with.
