I've been trying books outside my usual genre to see if I enjoy anything besides fantasy. This one sounded pretty good. It's kind of post apocalyptic/thriller.

There's been a deadly virus outbreak. Hannah is on a bus on her way to safety at the Retreat. It's a safe haven in the mountains away from the infected. The bus crashes.

Meg is on a cable car, also headed for the Retreat. The cable car stops.

Carter is at the Retreat already. Is it really a safe haven?

This was ok for me. I didn't love the characters. I did think it was pretty realistic as far as the rich getting preferential treatment if something like this happened. Overall, it's a decent story, but not one that will stick with me.

Thank you to Net Galley and the publisher for an e-arc.

I am… conflicted.

Do I love this book solely for the tension and mystery build up, or do I love it because it’s written by a woman? lol, maybe both.

The creepiness and tension throughout the book was so well built up, the different character chapters was so fun to read and see 3 different places where people are being killed in all 3 places. Absolutely fun to read.

The only thing that cringed me out were some characters in each section that were just.. too much. I wished a lot of these mystery who dunnit books just got rid of their overly pretentious characters but it’s just not fun to read. It slightly becomes unbearable when they just won’t cooperate and be decent people in a life or death situation. Maybe like real life but come on it’s just too much in books.

Also, that ending was so obvious. I spotted it around the middle of this book. For one, these three places couldn’t have a killer all at the same time set in the same time and all going towards the same place lol, that was dodgy off the bat. But then a lot of mystery books have a “present” “past” “future” sections so that gave it away.

I’m glad the killer was who they were, definitely didn’t guess it was them until the author actually told us, but knew the timeline had to overlap at some point at weren’t in sync the way we were made to think they were.

Overall, loved this book for the beginning and middle, but definitely not the ending.

Boas leituras!

Decent story and pace, but found it hard to connect to most of the characters. A little too many for my taste. Also, not nearly as much “zombie” action as I was expecting, frankly the story might have been more interesting without them, they didn’t really add too much to the story.
