Another great volume! Especially the continuous play with the idea of good and evil was very interesting. Dieter added a heartwarming quality to it all. Overall, I am very curious to see where the story goes from here, especially after the discovery at the end!

Monster is unlike every Manga I’ve read before. Most of the time, the story is just disturbing and an emotional rollercoaster. Monster 2 has so many unpredictable amazing plot twists after plot twists and is able to shock me all the time so I don’t want to write anything specific about the plot. I’m also scared for the characters I like most of the time, so I myself was tense while reading it. This tense atmosphere is increased by the great pacing and the changing perspectives at the right time.

The best thing about Monster are the characters without question. Urasawa is able to portray each character so well that you can immediately feel what they feel. The characters are very multidimensional and complex which is not seen that often in popular Manga. Not one of them has it easy; each character has its own burden to bear which makes them more individual. Some of the characters are easy to put into the “good” and “evil” category, but many of them fit more into the grey category, so it’s hard to form an opinion on them.

There are some characters that found a place into my heart though. One of them is Temna, since I love his design and how he stands up for the people that are important to him. I also love Nina so much since she takes initiative by herself and doesn’t wait for some men to save her – we need more female characters like this is in Shonen/Seinen manga. Dieter is also an interesting character, and he deserves so so much better. I was so relieved that
Temna was able to save him and that he’s going with him now, that’s kinda wholesome

The only thing that I was not a fan of is the conclusion of Monster 2
that Johann may have a split personality. It feels a bit like a demonisation of mental illness, since dissociative identity disorder is real and not “evil”
. I’m still hyped to see how the series will continue.
