it is so disappointing to be reading this book and come across racist comments. it ruins any enjoyment i was feeling.

aside from that, this was a less enjoyable Christie because I was able to guess the plot in the first 30ish pages. however, i really enjoyed the last 20 pages where we get the interactions between Poirot and Jacqueline after the murderer is revealed.

TW: racist language used to describe Egyptians and people from Africa. Overall xenophobia - Christie definitely airs her biases towards others in her books.

A fun premise for a mystery, generally good cast of characters. The opening set up gives allure, mystery, wealth, petty gossip. Loved it.

Once the Author is able to gather our cast up into the same place, things go flat and become disappointing.

Once again (she has a way about her), Christie is a real racist and her anti-labor sentiments are on display here. If you want to whine that “that’s just the way it was back then” - save it. It’s not necessary to to the plot and look up the original title of “And Then There We’re None”.

The descriptions of the Egyptians in this book are wholly unnecessary and ugly, moving the plot nowhere and generally disrupting the pleasantries one likes from The Detective. It’s casual and cruel to no purpose.

She’s at her best when criticizing the British in social habitats.

Furthermore, the unwinding of the mystery is somewhat boring and convoluted.

Again, great premise and cast of characters, but overall poor execution of the story.

One of Christie’s best mysteries, however in this Egyptian setting Christie’s anti-blackness comes out pretty strongly alongside the usual cocktail of classism and glorification of empire.
