This novella is a smart introduction to the Sanguine series. The hint of a supernatural occurrence is just enough of a taste and leads into book 1, The Blood Gospel.

It was as if the world had shrunk to this small village. And its bloody secrets."

I picked up this short ebook on sale for Kindle and now I have a new series to check out. As an introduction to the Order of the Sanguines series it did it's job by making me curious to read more. The plot here, involving an ancient betrayal and a group of slaughtered archeologists in the modern day, easily could've supported an entire, full-length novel. The writing style was easy and balanced well against the weird stuff going on and the characters were presented in a way that makes me want to get to know them better.

This is just a novella preceding the Blood Gospel. It's pretty good for a short. Lots of action, good characters I'm looking forward to getting to know better in the next book.

After reading several of Rollins' earlier work, I expected to also like this one but it was not the case.
The story wasn't as interesting as I thought it would be and the characters were bland and uninteresting.

Very short but enough of a tease to make me read the next book.

Not at all what I expected & definitely not the caliber story I expect from James Rollins.

I was not paying a lot of attention while reading this book. Which, admittedly, contributes to the two star score it received (if I could do half stars, I probably would have given it the 2.5). I have also read the first two books in this series and could not really figure out why this short story mattered at all to the upcoming events. While vaguely interesting, it was not what I was hoping/expecting it would be.
