I don't mean to be verbose in my hatred but I can never put my finger on it when I love a book. You just feel it in your bones when the plot, story, and characters come together.

For this, it is almost 50 pages in before you meet the character that drives the plot. Red flag 1. I actively chose to do other things than pick this back up. Red flag 2. I read the first ~80 pages. Skipped to the last ~80 pages and still managed to grasp where the story had gone. Red flag 3.

I was never emotionally invested in the characters. I did not care where they went and what happened to them. I did not question their choices or motives. The writing read like a MFA draft. This was not it for me.

The characters were unlikeable and made a lot of questionable choices for what felt like no reason, and it hit a point where the references to sexual violence felt excessive, just to highlight that the world was so awful.
Couldn't get into it at all.
