A real page-turner with an iconic protagonist in the form of detective Harry Hole. From the start Harry is barely functioning, psychologically and physically wounded, substance addicted, and generally waving a red flag to his own mortality. In this wearied state he has to pull back from the brink to hunt for a serial killer, whilst both dealing with the ill health of his father, and trying to avoid political turmoil within the police services.
It's a tense, taut, journey with many a twist, and you’ll lose count of the number of times you stare at the page dumbfounded thinking, yet again, you’ve failed to predict the next change up. Harry laconically smokes his way through the story, swinging between being a shambles of a man and an absolute badass. I enjoyed every grit-blasted page of it.

Another fantastic book by Jo Nesbo. Where Harry Hole is brought back too solve a serial killer on the loose. Although this book had some gruesome deaths in it, it was a great read. Looking forward too reading more books by Jo Nesbo

Vorhersehbar, Charaktere, die sich nicht weiterentwickeln, zu sehr in die Länge gezogen

This is an affirmation to my neurotic need to read a series in order from start to finish, even if technically they can be read as stand alone books. Perhaps some was lost in translation (and I'm really kicking myself for not sticking with it and learning Norsk 10 years ago so I could have read the original version). Half the time I didn't seem to know what was going on or who the characters were. For example, one minute they're stuck in a cabin after an avalanche, breathing through a thin tube as their only air source, then the next minute they were on a snowmobile near the edge of a cliff? I somehow missed their entire escape from the cabin and where in the world the snowmobile came from. I feel like I missed a lot of backstory on Harry as well.
