I'm a weirdo that has read the HH series completely out of order and this is one of the last books (Not** in correct order) that I've read. Pro Tip: I  envision HH as David Tennant.

I thought it was good, not great, but a bit messy and overly long. Plot and writing are better than previous books (in the correct order, The Bat, The Snowman, etc). You can see Nesbo improving as a mystery writer. However I got tired of the Scandinavian racism that came through in this book that I hated in The Bat. I could see it alienating a readers.

That said if you havent been offended or turned off by the length the books only get better and shorter in the correct order. He did well for the length and complexity.

This was the first book I had read by Jo Nesbø. It was in many ways a typical Scandinavian thriller. An obsessive, idiosyncratic detective as the central character. A number of red herrings and clever plot twists until the truth is finally removed. Heroic or evil male characters and weak females. Page-turning suspense. Rather more gruesome details than are necessary, but that could also have been worse.
The book is very long, just over 600 pages. It read very easily, so that wasn't such a problem, but nevertheless, it would probably have benefited from a bit more editing.
If you enjoy thrillers, you will like this book.
