The first half of this book is so boring, but I couldn't put it down for the last half. I'm not used to the traditional "whodunit" style mystery, so the complete absence of character development had me wondering why I was continuing. After about 150 pages of plot setup, however, I finally came to an understanding that this type of mystery is all about the intricacies of plot.

Good book. I would read more of Yokomizo's stuff.

I enjoyed the mystery.  A classic whodunit, so not crazy plot twist but just a rush to figure it out before it's revealed.
Thought the writing and pacing was consistent that helped the story flow and made it feel like a quicker read.
Also like the details, not a lot of it but helps me understand some of the Japanese elements of the story.  Set in Japan, I think it adds Japanese culture and detail without slowing it down with heavy explanations. It is translated and I think it was done really well

I didn't expect to like this as much as I did. The bit of anti-war sentiment added so much to this golden-age-style detective story. It felt like it had something meaningful to say but very subtly.
