very very very slow start, but it does pick up, especially in the end.

i love that kosuke kindaichi is basically just a girl failure 🤣

minor spoilers:
gotta say though, the attempt to make it look like it could possibly have been the gone uncle failed so hard, I didn’t buy that for a second. the "out of reason but it cannot be helped" rather made the religious guy look suspicious and didn’t really work as a red herring.

overall, an enjoyable read!

A solid -if slightly convoluted and misogynistic (yes of course all the victims are women, and yes of course the murderers are in some ways admired, for their “skilfully” committed crimes), murder mystery.

Totted as japans equivalent to an Agatha Christie, you can bet your bottom dollar (or yen) that I was excited to receive this in the post from the publishers!

However, though it may indeed have all the essential ingredients for a detective, crime noir (or as often the case with an AC, romp!) -Christie’s quintessential charm, cleverness and spot on characterisation, where sadly, nowhere in sight.

The lack of character development, combined with the rather cold and detached writing style, meant that I forever found it hard to fully connect and commit to the story being (rather boringly) relayed.
