Another buddy read with my gang who loves this detective serabai!
Kindaichi is back! And this time he's on a mission to Gokumon Island (lit. Hell's Gate Island) as he brings news of the death of his comrade to said comrade's family. The comrade's dying words are the reason that he goes to the island - to prevent some murders from happening.
True to his style, Yokomizo describes to us in detail the setting, history, technical mechanisms and exactly how the murders are done. As usual, the beginning is a little slow for me as he explains the background of the island. But once Kindaichi gets on the island, it's hard to put the book down. My guess is only partly correct, and mostly incorrect.
I just love the whole spooky and melancholic vibe that Yokomizo creates but this time, I feel like it's lacking the "oomph" that The Honjin Murders had. This case felt much less emotional and heavy compared to the other three books of his I have read. Still a great read though!
