comprehensive and well-written - it will probably be a bit dry or impersonal for readers who prefer a more popular / biographical approach but it's not obscurely academic either.
it covers big naps' rise to power which i knew very little about and wasn't expecting (i'm an until-the-directory girlie). fun! and it made me want to revisit a place of greater safety sooooo badly.

For being as long as it was, I FLEW through it. It read super easy, took time to catch you up on the key players and time frames, and gave a really great, detailed timeline for the revolution through Napoleon’s ascension as emperor.
My only complaint is the bold claim the author makes that “evidence suggests” Marie Antoinette and Axel von Ferson were lovers and her third and fourth children were his, but does not give us any evidence of such things. I would’ve enjoyed it more without such blatant speculation on an affair between them.
