This book was good but it could have been so much more.  The concept is really intriguing and the plot was excellent.  Prisca really annoyed me as a character.  She felt very Mary Sue "I can do no wrong" type, that didn't fit with the story.  I liked Lorian, he was jist more mature, especially his POV chapters made alot more sense.  This could have been a 5 star if the writing was a bit better, and the descriptions not being glossed over as much as they were.  Any character development felt rushed for all characters.  Normally books like this I get through quickly, this one I struggled a bit as I wasn't enthused to read in bits and pieces.  I had to dedicate an afternoon to finish it.  That said, I really enjoyed how it finished and will continue with the series.

This is the first fantasy I was truly able to love since finishing Throne of Glass. Not only did I love the story, it’s also a complete series so I don’t have to wait in cliffhanger purgatory!

The first 90% of this book is a lovely good time but that cliff hanger ending is CRUEL! So cruel that I’m immediately starting book 2 and will recommend it to everyone I know. If you are a SJM, Fourth Wing or Bridge Kingdom fan, do yourself a favor and read this ASAP.

It’s hard to describe the plot without spoiling but basically it’s a magical world where magic is highly regulated. Newborns’ magical powers are taken, but if the gods reject your power then you are considered corrupt. Which is life threatening. Our FMC is one of the corrupt and when she uses her magic to save a friend’s life, her secret is out that she is a corrupt and she goes on the run. There are heists, banter, found family and vigilantes.

Prisca, the FMC, is sassy but compassionate and always ends up doing the right thing even though she has flaws. The MMC is grumpy and morally gray and we love that.

This is one of those stories where you are slowly learning more and are kept guessing about who is who they say they are and if things are as they seem. We learn some by the end of book 1, but I know it’s gotta be tip of the iceberg. I can’t wait to read book 2.

*spoilers in this review*

I am unsure how I feel. I liked the plot and the magic system, the power of the FMC was cool and a bit different. For some reason I felt like something with the main characters was missing and I couldn’t connect to them, they also felt like they were acting out traits rather than feeling fully fleshed out during some scenes. I guess it was just missing something for me personally. With the romance I feel like a switch suddenly flipped where he really didn’t like her and then all of a sudden he was like I admit I’m obsessed, like 0 - 100. I prefer a slower burn with my fantasy romances.

Side tangent below

why did she have such a strong visceral reaction every time she is overwhelmed with grief and guilt? Like she threw up enough I noticed it as a reoccurring thing— like I get it’s intense but like, she almost passed out from emotions a weird amount. Maybe that’s me being too judgy.

Also I did find it hard to believe that after all this time of the rebellion one young woman, albeit with a powerful gift, managed to come up with a (pretty simple) plan to get prisoners out and being like the first to succeed and the one to ‘embarrass’ the king. Like they mention trying to get people in before but like was there really no one in all this time? How did she manage so quickly? Also how did no one notice she was stealing food to feed like 300 people, how did she even smuggle that much food? And nobody noticed her disappearing at odd hours or evidence the prison had been disturbed , they went like  every night.
