This book has very distinct sections that differ so greatly in tone. I thought this might be a whimsical, swashbuckling adventure but it nosedives into being extremely groteque and melancholic. At first, I found this change to be confusing, but upon reflection can see how this sudden turn into a horrific situation essentially aligns with how the characters would have found the events. I found the book to be overall intriguing, just unexpected. The marketing does the book no favours (I literally thought this might have been a YA from the blurb). The pacing is also very slow and struggled to keep my attention at points.

One thing that I loved was the completely unique writing style. It has a real dream-like, almost hazy quality that is so descriptive and really puts you in the unfolding scene. These descriptions can get graphic at times, so not for those faint of heart! Hard to know who to reccomend this to, but worth a try if you enjoy grittier historical fiction.

Argh the last third of this book was not at all what I expected. Truly like a train wreck you can't look away from. Almost DNF. Ending not worth it, wish I had put it down. Not a bad book (perhaps style over substance) but not for me.

Really struggled for the first half of this book. Took a while to get into the reading style of this, might’ve been better off reading the English version as some of it didn’t flow as easily in Norwegian. Definitely has its dark moments, but somehow ended up being quite hopeful at the end.
