Teenage criminal mastermind Artemis Fowl has discovered that demons are real and they're randomly appearing around the globe. He's determined to catch one in Sicily. He is thwarted in his plans by a girl who's about his age and her henchmen, who manage to capture the demon first. Along with Holly Short, who is worried that the demon may betray the existence of the rest of the fairy folk, and their company, Artemis attempts to rescue the demon from the mysterious girl.

Eh.

What was most interesting about this book is the setup for future stories. I don't want to give away spoilers, so I won't say much about that, but I will say that I like Minerva and hope that she becomes a recurring character. The other twists could lead to some very interesting developments.

I missed most of the oddball crew. This book focused so much on Artemis and Holly and the even the demon that I really missed Butler, Mulch, Foaly, etc. They were included--don't get me wrong--but not as much as I would have liked.

I don't have much more to say. This certainly wasn't as funny or entertaining as other Artemis Fowl books, but I have high hopes for the books that follow.

My full review is here on my personal website. I'll post a few excerpts here, though:

The very worst thing about this book is that all the warlocks have a “Q” name. Seriously, one of them was named Qwerty. O_o Weird and lame.

The very best thing about this book is the demons! I love that Colfer has introduced demons into his world. :-D It’s easily one of the coolest things about this series.

“Oh, brilliant. I must write that one down in my witty retorts book.” Mulch

'If it's not goblin gangs, it's time-travelling demons.' Holly kissed him on the cheek. 'That was probably dangerous. You being a pubescent volcano.'
'I've got it under control, just about.'
Holly pointed to her new blue eye. 'We'll always be a part of each other now.'
Artemis tapped the cheek below his fairy hazel eye. 'I'll keep an eye out for you.'

The book skillfully navigates an intricate plot, introducing captivating issues that elevate the story's appeal. The narrative takes a sophisticated turn, appealing more to an adult audience, while maintaining its trademark entertainment and thrill. The characters, as always, are both amazing and exceptionally developed, adding depth to the overall experience. I thoroughly enjoyed the book for its engaging storyline, the evolution of its characters, and the seamless blend of entertainment and excitement.
