I read this book due to Book Club! I do like historical fiction but lately it’s not been my favorite genre…However, I did enjoy reading this book (or should I say listening to because I mostly did audio book for this book lol) and found the plot mostly sad due to the main character Meri experiencing what one may say is hardship and difficulty with going against the grain of society. Originally I had rated this book a 4 star BUT after attending book club my view slightly changed on the book. It was painful to read about a character who was never brave enough to do anything impact until the very end where there is a bit of hope. It was also misleading with the title having “Atomic” and very little talk about the atomic bomb besides the reader knowing that Meri is married to a scientist who is helping create the atomic bomb. Lastly, the book had bits of feminism in it but the author never elaborated or explored that topic, which for some is okay and others may have wanted more like myself. Overall, I do recommend this book for my historical fiction peeps and due to the relatability to the main character along with a beautiful writing style.

The plot was frustrating, outdated, but deeply human. How accurate that many people are given many opportunities but aren’t brave enough to chase them.
Made me glad to have been born when I did. Had a hard time believing the 20 year younger hippie romance.

More than anything, this book made me happy to have grown up after the early struggles of the "women's movement," in a time when I could easily take advantages of the opportunities afforded to me. Otherwise, I felt really frustrated by the main character and the storyline until maybe the last 15 pages of the book.
Enjoyed this story of a woman's growth into personal identity and purpose at a time when women were discouraged from wanting anything more than to be the one-person service industry for a man. The parallel theme about birds delighted me, although the analogous comparisons were sometimes awkward.
Another intensely frustrating reader experience. Dear Authors, the brilliant young woman who falls in love, gets married, and then the man changes into a horrible person neglecting said wife who starts to pine for a different life has been done A MILLION TIMES. It's boring, and no matter what the setting the story is the same. Please stop the madness.
Beautiful, Full, complete
A story of love about the price we pay, especially as women, for the decisions we make in our lives. As a scientist and educator I especially enjoyed the setting, but anyone could pull the theme out.

There were times I was prepared to put the book aside and yet I didn't. To have captured the sweep of one life time seemed ambitious and, for this reader, there were periods of the story that dipped .. occasionally into an almost Mills and Boon(esk) story but then the latter part of the story held my interest.
Much history is covered ... a woman's journey, the female journey, the development of atomic warfare and the costs of war and for all of this it was worth staying to the end.
