This book was really good and had amazing characters/plot. I was hooked almost immediately and could really get into the writing style. I enjoyed Esther’s inner thoughts and the narration of everything. However, the reason it’s not rated higher is the length. I feel like I would’ve been more emotionally attached to the characters (much sooner) if there had been more. The book could have started with Esther’s backstory and her escape. I also could’ve done with a little more worldbuilding because (maybe it was just me) I didn’t fully understand until about halfway through. I liked the ending a lot, but there could’ve been more in the middle where we got to see more of the group. I still loved everyone, and this book got me out of a reading slump!

This is just a great book! It ticks so many boxes for me, and often I find myself disappointed by books that seem like box-tickers, but this really delivered. I can't recommend it enough!

This was a really well done novella. Gailey created more empathetic, complex characters than many authors have accomplished with many more pages.

I will convince you to read this in one sentence:
sapphic and non-binary bandit/librarians in a western dystopian

Are you convinced?

This book was fine. It didn’t blow me away. It was a little heavy handed or corny at times. Lots of queer and trans characters. A dystopian future that feels just like the Wild West.

A fun, fast read that needed more of everything to really make it stick. Feels like a book that, when I'm reviewing my 2024 reading list in December, I'll think, Oh yeah, I read that, but I won't be able to tell you much about it.

For anyone else thinking, "This was a good but underdeveloped idea," I highly recommend Charlotte Nicole Davis' Good Luck Girls duology. It treads many similar themes and gives them much more room to breathe. https://app.thestorygraph.com/series/2450
