I can confidently say that I did not see the ending of this book coming AT ALL. I will, however, say that I had a theory that really hurt my heart, so I'm very glad that I did end up being wrong because I don't think I would've survived had I been correct.

The shocking ending aside, though, the hype for this book is so well deserved. It's so much more than a true crime podcaster falling for the small town sheriff, it's a heartbreaking story of two people who are broken in ways no one else can imagine, finding solace with one another. And in finding that solace, finally figuring out the mystery that's plagued them both for years.

And the side characters are absolutely the most lovable group of people on the planet. Norm, Sam, Celia, Ezra, Dean, Trey... I could go on forever about how much they added to the story just by being their hilarious, meddling selves. And Emerson, the strongest woman on the planet. I hope she finds her HEA (preferably with Trey) and has a life that brings her infinite happiness and comfort. No one deserves it more.

This book is so much more than romance or suspense. It's a real look at grief and anxiety and fear and how one moment can change your entire life for better or worse. I don't think I'll ever be able to forget about the time I spent in Shady Cove with Law Man & Chaos. I love them infinitely.

I love this author and the previous mystery/suspense, romance books. I’ve read from her I have really enjoyed! I felt like we jumped into the romance, a little too quickly with this one so it was a little less believable. The twist is great though, and one that I did not see coming! I also genuinely really liked both the male and female main character characters, and I do like their relationship!

Ridley is a true crime podcaster who makes her way into a small town to uncover the cold case of a decade old attempted abduction. Ridley feels a strong connection to this case in particular because of her past and like some of the other cases she has covered, she wants to help the affected people by resolving this case. But the town’s grumpy but protective sheriff, Colt who is highly suspicious of Ridley, is her main obstacle as he makes it his mission to have Ridley be on her way. When the case begins to be thrown wide open again due to Ridley’s investigation, Colt has no choice but to help her.

I absolutely loved this story! Being a fellow true crime podcast lover, the whole concept of the book was right up my alley. There were interviews, multiple suspects and logical methodology that are typically included in a good true crime podcast, but put into a romantic suspense story! Basically, many things that I love were incorporated.

Another aspect of the book that I love was the setting and characters. With its stunning lakes and mountain views, I felt like I was right there experiencing the sites. I couldn’t get enough of Ridley’s cat, Tater and her “tooth hugs”! Additionally, the enemies-to-lovers trope was full on between the two MCs. The two’s chemistry was sizzling and I was here for it. The cast of secondary characters deserved an Oscar. They had depth, strategically contributing to the story by keeping the pacing of the story running along and making me want to know them all as friends.

Additionally, the narration by Andi Ardnt and Sebastian York swept me away into Ridley’s and Colt’s world and was a great audiobook to listen to.

Overall, this felt quite different than a lot of Catherine’s stories and she did a spectacular job in crafting this story.

Thank you Sourcebooks for the arc and Dreamscape Media for the alc. All thoughts in this review are my own.
